ROW WITH CHINOOK
OUR TEAM
At the start of each year we invite a roster of returning athletes to row with Chinook based on performance, attitude, commitment and planned regattas. The composition of the invited team is based on the number and types of rowers we need to successfully compete at specific events while still offering a quality experience for each rower.
We select new athletes each year based on performance, skill level, dedication to training, cultural fit with the team, and their ability to make Chinook their priority at major events. This ongoing commitment means that we are not a 'rolodex' crew.
EXPECTATIONS
We expect all athletes to commit to a training plan, race in excellent health and fitness, continuously improve their rowing skills, be willing to blend with their crew, and commit to the seat and boat assigned. While we recognize performance on the ergometer is only one component of evaluation and readiness for racing, Chinook strives to have our athletes at minimum meet the 90th percentile of Concept2's rankings for 1k and 5k times each year. We also expect our athletes to pay dues and fees on time, assist teammates at regattas, and demonstrate sportsmanship toward each other, officials and other teams.
In turn, Chinook athletes race in current, well-maintained shells and oars, compete with experienced coxswains and committed teammates, receive multiple racing opportunities as permitted by each regatta, and have access to individual and team coaching at camps. Additionally, regatta logistics are well organized and clearly communicated.
HOW THE CLUB WORKS

Planning
Members select from annual schedule of events and plan fees and travel coordination.
Scheduling
In late fall or early winter, the board solicits member interest and availability for upcoming camps and regattas. Age/ gender/ side/ performance are all evaluated to establish initial boat lineups, then confirmations for events are sent to interested athletes.
Fees
Annual dues are collected in January. Once an athlete is confirmed for a camp or regatta, a non-refundable deposit is due. The balance of the fees are due 45 days before an event.
Travel
Athletes are responsible for their own travel plans and accommodations. Many teammates coordinate on transportation and housing.

Training
Athletes coordinate consistent training through the year.
Year-round Fitness
All athletes must be on a year-round training program that includes water time, erging, core conditioning, and weightlifting.
Training Plan
It is our strong preference that athletes follow the RoyleRow program since it has been specifically designed for Chinook by our training partner Marlene Royle.
Check-Ins
At any time, we may ask athletes to submit a specific
workout from the RoyleRow plan to measure fitness. If not subscribed to this plan, a workout will be sent.

Events
Team camps and regattas are the highlight of the Chinook racing experience.
Equipment & Coxies
Equipment and coxswains are funded through member fees and provided at all events.
Camps
All athletes attend at least one camp per year. At camps, participants receive technical coaching on Chinook’s preferred stroke style, learn how to blend with others in the boat and build relationships through social activities. Athletes' performance at camps helps determine lineups for racing.
Regattas
Boat entries and lineups are sent in advance. Athletes are responsible for rigging / de-rigging boats, carrying oars, taking care of equipment, and helping to clean up the regatta site after racing.
